The Great Yorkshire Show once again provided an excellent platform for the British Rouge Sheep Society, with a strong and varied entry showcasing the quality, consistency and future potential of the breed.
The judge, Stephen Houston of the Oldwood Flock in County Antrim, commented that the quality of sheep on display was excellent, particularly among the adult sheep, describing the standard as a real credit to all the breeders involved.
Across the classes, there was plenty to admire, from mature rams displaying power and breed character through to a particularly encouraging selection of youngstock. The standard throughout was high, reflecting the continued progress being made by breeders.
The ram class was headed by Powerhouse Caveman, exhibited by Aiden Mitchell, who later stood out as Male Champion. This ram also stood as Overall Champion at the 2025 British Rouge Sheep Society Premier Show and Sale at Carlisle, and he was purchased for the day’s top price of 2800gns.
The ram lamb class provided a strong indication of the future, with Jets Eveready, exhibited by Ian Teasdale, taking the top spot. The ewe lamb class was also won by Ian with Jets Esme, further underlining the strength of the youngstock classes and the exciting future ahead for the breed.
In the ewe class, Belroe Cranberry ET, exhibited by Tom Belfield, took first place, ahead of Grassknop Beautiful from Aiden Mitchell.
The shearling ewe class was another competitive section, headed by Clanfield Diva, exhibited by Aled Groucott who later took the female and overall champion winnings. The judge found his champion in what he described as a very impressive class of gimmers. He said the winning sheep was an “incredible gimmer”, combining correctness with excellent skin and carcass qualities. However, it was her show-ring style that ultimately set her apart. She simply demanded attention in the ring. The reserve champion, Jets Diamond 1 from Ian Teasdale, was also found in the gimmer class, with Mr Houston describing her as another special sheep, again possessing fantastic skin and carcass qualities. Together, the champion and reserve were described as “two cracking sheep that are an excellent advertisement for the breed.”
